MEMOIRS OF THE LIFE OF MISS CAROLINE ELIZABETH SMELT, WHO DIED SEPT. 21, 1817, IN THE CITY OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA, IN THE 17TH YEAR OF HER AGE; COMPILED FROM AUTHENTIC PAPERS, FURNISHED BY HER FRIENDS, AND PUBLISHED AT THEIR REQUEST.
Waddell, Rev. Moses:(pastor at Willington, South Carolina (teacher of John C. Calhoun), 1770-1840.)

1820 Second edition. Owners inscription along with scribble to inside cover and a little on title page. Fly missing, otherwise book condition good. Secure binding, some browning to pages but textblock in good order.

`When Caroline was a little more than eight years old her curiosity was considerably excited to see the Augusta races. .but before the race was over she was brought home as pale as a little corpse. On inquiring the cause of her returning in that manner, she said, "she had been very much disappointed in the amusement; that she had been nothing but a frightful confusion, and the poor horses whipped and run almost to death; that she had concealed her terror as much as possible, for fear of interrupting the friends which whom she was; but at length two men got to fighting near the carriage in which she was seated, and she heard a loud exclamation of War! War! which alarmed her so exceedingly that she was near fainting, when her friend, seeing her situation, brought her away immediately." She, ever afterwards, evinced a great abhorrence of this amusement.'
"Best sellers are often a fickle and unpredictable lot but perhaps none has deserved this reputation more than Waddel's eulogium An immensely popular work in the decade following its publication, Waddel insured that the fame and righteousness of a teenager, Caroline, spread from American even to Edinburgh, where the book was reprinted in 1821. Such a morally uplifting tale found ready success in the early nineteenth century and Waddel's own popularity propelled him from a Willington, South Carolina, ministry to the presidency of the University of Georgia."
