PERSONAL REMINISCENSES OF HENRY IRVING BY BRAM STOKER 1906 1st 2 VOLS

Formerly belonging to City of York Library, Reference Department. Attractive bookplate, usual stamps etc. Library binding with stamped City of York crest on leather spine.


Both volumes tightly bound good condition a few minor marks and taped repair to fold out facsimile letter. 9 3/4 x 6 inches.
 
Henry Irving was one of the most prominent actors of his day, appearing mostly in Shakespearean plays. He was knighted in 1895, the 1st actor so honored. For 22 years he played opposite actress Ellen Terry, who became a very close friend. Her acting skills were rewarded with the title Grand Dame Cross, Order of the British Empire, in 1925. Stoker won greater fame with a book he'd published 8 years earlier with the title of DRACULA.

I

THE first time I ever saw Henry Irving was at the
Theatre Royal, Dublin, on the evening of Wednes-
day, August 28, 1867. Miss Herbert had brought
the St. James,'s Company on tour, playing some of
the Old Comedies and Miss Braddon's new drama
founded on her successful novel, Lady Audley's
Secret. The piece chosen for this particular night
was The Rivals in which Irving played Captain
Absolute.
