About the Book

The tank that was to become the Panzerkampfwagen III (PzKpfw III) occupied an important slot in German 1939-1945 tank development. When the German armoured warfare planners converted their theoretical deliberations into `hard' designs from about 1930 onwards, there were four main models under consideration - one of which was the Panzer III.

During the early war years the Panzer III formed the backbone of the Panzer formations and it carried the main combat burdens from 1940 until 1943 when production ceased. Although by then it was outclassed for armoured warfare the Panzer III fulfilled an important support role until the end of the war.

Designed specifically with the modeller, preservationist and wargamer in mind, Ian Allen Publishing's 'in Detail' series provides readers with a comprehensive history of the type of tank, self-propelled gun or military transport featured.

Each volume in the series includes a detailed history of the equipment in service, along with information on variants, markings and unit allocation. Alongside the comprehensive illustrated section every book also includes scale drawings.

Featuring:
  • Design Development history
  • Chassis - engines - tracks
  • Turret - fighting compartment
  • Armament
  • Markings and insignia
  • Line Drawings
