Reggae music, which grew out of the '60s music scene in Jamaica, has continued to grow in popularity over the decades and has transcended all geographical and cultural barriers. Events like the annual Notting Hill Carnival in London are testament to its enormous appeal to music fans.

This 15-CD set brings together some of the legendary names of the musical genre, and includes both live and studio recordings. Key names here include Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Sly & Robbie, Lee Perry, The Specials & Fun Boy Three, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott and Andy Horace.

The first Reggae Sumfest was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica in August 1993 after the organisers of the highly successful Reggae Sun Splash festival, which had been held there for 16 years, decided to move the event to Kingston. A group of local Montego Bay businessmen decided to create their own live reggae music festival, and Sumfest was born. Today it is probably the most successful and well-known live reggae music event in the world..



CDs 1-5 1993 Reggae Sumfest - Recorded Live In Jamaica feature many of the acts who performed at that first pioneering Sumfest reggae music event which attracted an audience of many thousands, and quickly became one of Jamaica's most popular tourist attractions. Among the many reggae artists whose great live performances are captured on the five CDs are the legendary Gregory Isaacs, Leroy Smart, Frankie Paul, Bounty Killer, General Gegree, Sanchez, Major Mackerel ans Wayne Wonder.

CD 6 Horace Andy is one of the most favoured vocalists among reggae fans. His Haunting style has been imitated many times by scores of up-and-coming reggae peformers over five years. Andy’s influence on reggae music generally, and on other reggae singers in particular, is incalculable.

CD 7 Lee Perry comprises 15 classic recordings by Lee Perry who began his career back in the ‘50s and who is now reconised as one of the pioneers of reggae music. Perry had a UK TOP 5 success with Return Of Django in 1969, paving the way for many other aspiring reggae artists. He also penned Susan Cadogan’s UK Top 5 hit Hurt So Good. The legendary Bob Marley once described Perry as a ‘genius’; saying that he had made one of the most individual contributions to the development of Jamaican music.

CD 8 Specials & Fun Boy Three stars two of the UK’s most successful home-grown reggae recording acts. The specials led the early 80s ska revival and had 11 major hit singles including the number 1 Ghost Town, featured here. Fun Boy Three, fronted by Terry Hall, chalked up five 10 hits including It Ain’t What You Do It’s The Way That You Do It and The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum), also included here.

CD 9 The Untouchables had their first UK chart success with Free Yourself, which spent 11 weeks in the top 30, followed by I-Spy For The FBI. Both those hits are included here, along with Whiplash, Mandingo, Keep On Pushing and Free Yourself.

CD 10 Dennis Brown - a live concert from the reggae giant.

CDs 11 and 12 are compilations of some of the finest reggae recordings by such influential names as Horace Andy, Mikey Jarette, Lee Perry, The Upsetters, Delroy Williams, Sammy Levi and Augustos Pablo.

CD 13 is another compilation of reggae classics including Ken Boothe's Silver Words, Ungrateful Girl by Mystic, Mickey General’s Yesterday, Party Time by the Stewart Brothers and Lady by Danger Youth.

CD 14 is a first-class collection with hits by Clint Eastwood (Love Story), Why Do You Hurt Me So (John Holt), Dennis Brown (Africa), Don Carlos (Rivers Of Babylon), Gregory Isaacs (Too Late) and Sugar Minott (Save The Children).

CD 15 Bob Marley features 16 electrifying recordings by the late reggae legend including Soul Shakedown, Lively Up Yourself, Soul Almighty and Sun Is Shining.
