Up for auction today is this sealed cd, a Starbucks Anthology cd circa 1996 from their 25th anniversary. A review: This is one of the best compilation discs I own. It was issued in 1996 for Starbuck's 25th anniversary. Whatever you may feel about Starbucks, they do issue a never-ending series of high quality cds. This is certainly one of them. It contains thirteen tracks from 1971 ( ithink that not may be true with some of the songs) and they range from the well-known to the very rare and possibly out of print. I think the cd itself is out of circulation too but if you happen to find it, you will not be disappointed.
The track order is unusual as #3 and #5 are over 11 minutes in length and everything after that can seem anti-climactic. But that is my only criticism.
1. John Lennon - INSTANT KARMA (3.22). One of Lenno's best post-Beatle songs and I love it. Everybody knows it so I do not have anything else to add.
2. Spirit - NATURE'S WAY (2.34). Had not heard this song before I bought this album but it is a fine song, maybe a little preachy but this was one of the first songs I know of to deal with the environment.
3. Traffic - THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH-HEELED BOYS (11.34). No editing job here. The full length version in all its weird glory!
4. Love - ALONE AGAIN OR (3.16) Love's biggest (and only?) hit. Another track that is still very popular today. Unfortunately the song gets sandwiched between two monsters.
5. The Chambers Brothers - TIME HAS COME TODAY (11.05). Another whopper! Full length version. Not really my favourite and does not hold the attention as well as Traffic's song.
6. Tim Buckley - PLEASANT STREET (5.17). Another song I had never heard of before and it is definitely my favourite. Buckly died before he was 30 years old and semed to be a tormented soul. But here he took great lyrics, great melody and great arrangement to create a song that I hope will be better known. Love the line: "All the stony people walking round in Christain liquorice clothes"
7. Al Green - YOU OUGHT TO BE WITH ME (3.20). Ah that voice! One of his all-time classics
8. Todd Rundgren - HELLO IT"S ME (3.51). One of the pop/rock world's unsung heroes. Here is a simple, memorable song with the falsetto middle eight adding a unique touch.
9. Joan Baez - LET IT BE (3.35). The only song on the album i do not like. I was never too fond of the original but I would have much preferred it over this ho-hum version. As Simon Cowell would say: "There is nothing memorable about it"
10. Marvin Gaye - WHAT"S GOING ON? (3.53). Another classic that is universally known. A whole new direction for Marvin with this release.
11. Lee Michaels - DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN (3.15). Another well known song. Not bad but sort of trivial when compared to the other songs here.
12. Rod Stewart - REASON TO BELIEVE (4.09). One of Rod's early classics. Not written by Rod but a very effective cover of Tim Hardin's song.
13. The Allman Brothers Band - MIDNIGHT RIDER (2.54) Another evergreen that is one of The Allman Brothers shorter songs but it is a high quality miniature.. Housed at my old record store (now defunct except for online)!
