Melvin Gibbs is one of the most versatile American musicians around--the Brooklyn-bred bassist has played in hip-hop, jazz, Brazilian, and indie rock contexts, with John Zorn, Eddie Palmieri, and the (Henry) Rollins Band. ANCIENTS SPEAK is the debut of Gibbs's ambitious Elevated Entity project, wherein he combines the traditional songs, rhythms, and chants of the Yoruba people, rap, jazz-charged solos, thorny funk, slammin' heavy beats, and whiffs of jungle/drum n' bass rhythms and psychedelic guitar (Pete Cosey, ex-Miles Davis). It's a heady, almost intoxicating mix--Gibbs and his crew (including John Medeski and Craig Taborn) keep the overall vibe upbeat, and never overwhelming.
