The Great Betrayal, How the Trade Union Leaders sold out Vauxhalls, by Dave Wiltshire and Paddy O'Reagan Published by News Line, 17 pages. Large A4 size booklet ASK workers in Luton what they were doing on Tuesday, December 12th, 2000, and most will be able to tell you. That date sticks in the collective memory because that was the day that workers found out that General Motors had given the town a 'death sentence'- it was going to shut down the Vauxhall Luton plant, with 2,000 sackings...... To rub salt into the wound, the announcement of the closure was made through the media, with the workers being the last to know, and their trade union officials professing complete ignorance about the decision. The reaction of workers to the news was instantaneous. On Wednesday morning, over 200 workers forced Vauxhall UK boss, Nick Riley to come out of his office and speak to them. He did so surrounded by hired security guards. On Wednesday afternoon, masses of workers downed tools and broke through police lines to enter the administration block to again demand answers to their questions from Riley. They received no satisfaction and shouted `Judas' at Riley. On Thursday, in a wave of spontaneous anger, the whole of General Motors Britain shut down with Ellesmere Port, the Vauxhall Parts Plant - Toddington, and IBC next door to Vauxhall Luton, walking out in solidarity with the Vauxhall workers. There were also walk-outs at the GM Bochum plant in Germany and the plants in Antwerp and Brazil. The GM diktat that Vauxhall must close was answered by an international movement of workers erupting in anger, and announcing that it was ready, willing and able to stop the closure. This booklet tells the story of the closure, and the failure of the Trade Union and Labour movement to protect jobs and stand up for the workers Illustrated throughout with several black and white photographs Condition of the booklet is very good. The cover has one or two very minor scuffs but is clean and tidy, the staple spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Has an old small price sticker on the inside front cover. S4901
