To call STARDUST, Natalie Cole's third collection of pop standards, "timeless" tells only half the story. Once again, recording studio wizardry has enabled Cole to reunite with her famous father for two of the album's 19 tracks. This time the results are noticeably different. Where the 1991 single "Unforgettable" kept Natalie firmly in her father's shadow, "When I Fall In Love" is far more assured--it's Natalie's turn to step into the foreground. Ballads greatly outnumber up-tempo tunes on STARDUST, and Cole has picked a bumper crop. The haunting "There's A Lull In My Life" opens the album perfectly. Cole's Portuguese rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dindi" demonstrates her ability to convey a song's emotional punch, even when the average listener won't understand a word she sings. And the title tune, perhaps the greatest ballad ever written, takes Cole into hallowed ground, and into the very highest reaches of American female vocalists.
