(CAUTION: Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment with ignition on or engine running.)
2.1 Read Codes
1. Turn the ignition off if it is on.
2. Locate the 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC), and plug into the Auto scanner cable connector.
3. Wait for the LCD display to read “AUTOSCAN CAN VW”
4. Turn the ignition on. But do not start the engine.
5. Press any key to display the menu or wait for 5 seconds for the menu to come up. The display will show “MENU 1.ENGINE”.
6. Press the SCROLL button to select one of the four systems (ENGINE, A/T, SRS & ABS) to be scanned from the menu and press the ENTER button to read.
7. A sequence of messages showing the protocols will be observed on the display until the vehicle protocol is detected.
7.1 If an “LINKING ERROR!” message shows up, turn the ignition off for about 10 seconds, check if the auto scanner’s OBD II connector is securely connected to the vehicle’s DLC, and then turn the ignition back to on. Repeat the procedure form step 5. If the “ERROR” message does not go away, then there may be problems for the code reader communicate with the vehicle
7.2 If you wish to skip the Engine system, just press and release the SCROLL button. When the display indicates “ABS READ?”, you may choose to read this system by pressing and releasing the ENTER button or skip to the next systems: SRS or AT(Automatic Transmission) by choosing the SCROLL button.
8. Read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes on the LCD display.
8.1 If there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes present, the display will read “NO CODES”.
8.2 If there are an DTCs present, then a brief overview with the total count of the trouble codes will be reported on the display “DTC:11”. Press the SCROLL button to read the DTCs, the DTC number will be displayed on the first line and sequence of the DTC currently being observed will apprear on the second line. E.g. “17987 01/11”. A flashing right arrow indicates that there are additional DTCs present, press the SCROLL button as necessary until all the codes have shown up. E.g. “17965 11/11”. To view previous codes, press and release the SCROLL button to scroll through to the end and then back to the first code of the list.
9. Look up part 4 for Diagnostic Trouble Code Definitions. Match the retrieved DTC(s) with those listed and read the definitions.
2.2 Erase Codes
CAUTION: Erasing the Diagnostic trouble Codes allows the Auto scanner to delete not only the codes form the vehicle’s on-board computer, but also “Freeze Frame” data and manufacturer specific enhanced data. Further, is reset to not RUN or not COMPLETE status. Do not erase the codes before the system has been checked completely by technicians or yourself.
1. From the main menu, use the SCROLL button to select one of the 4 systems (ENGINE, A/T, SRS & ABS) where the stored DTCs are to be erased.
2. Press and hold the SCROLL button for about 5 seconds and a message of “ERASE? YES NO” comes up asking for your confirmation.
3. If you do not want to proceed with erasing the codes, press the SCROLL button to return to the main menu.
4. If you do wish to proceed to erasing the codes, then press the ENTER button to confirm.
5. If the codes are cleared successfully, an “ERASE DONE!” message will show on the display, then press any button to return to the main menu.
6. If the codes are not cleared successfully, an “ERASE FAIL!” message will show on the display, press any button to return to the main menu.
