How Does a Flat Plate Heat Exchanger Work?
The Hot Fluid will pass from one port and out the other on the opposite end going the long way. The hot fluid will fill up every other channel created by the plates. The cold fluid will pass from one port to the other on the opposite side of the heat exchanger, filling up each channel which was not filled by the hot fluid. These thin plates which create these channels allow heat transfer between the two fluids to occur without actually mixing the fluids. Conduction occurs naturally from the heat temperature difference between the two fluids while convection occurs as the fluids move faster and turbulence occurs. Most of our heat exchangers are rippled so turbulence is forced into the heat exchanger, making a more efficient heat transfer.
How Many Plates? Which model should I use?
The best way to compare heat exchangers is to look at heat exchangers with the same amount of plates but different lengths. The heat exchangers with longer lengths will be more efficient since the fluids stay in the heat exchanger longer, allowing more heat transfer. Once the appropriate length has been chosen, adding plates allows you to have higher flow rates on the fluids without reducing the time the fluids stay in the plates. Since adding plates adds more channels, more fluid has to pass through these channels before they can leave the heat exchanger.
It is best to keep the velocity of the fluid as fast as possible, especially on the hot side and to have as long of a heat exchanger as you can afford. However, in some cases more heat transfer is desired but a long heat exchanger is not possible due to dimensional restrictions. In this case, adding more plates WILL increase heat transfer overall from the fluids staying in the heat exchanger longer. However, it will also reduce the velocity of the fluids because there are more channels, essentially reducing convective heat transfer.

through fedex, if your product arrives damaged, please contact us
immediately so we can file a claim and send you a fresh product (if
available). If your item appears to be stuck in transit, please contact
us so we can send a new shipment if the item was lost.
