Why?

Because it has a very high surface to cross-sectional area ratio,(this helps to minimise’skin effect’in the conductor).

What is dielectric absorbtion?

When current and voltage propagate in a conductor, the insulator (dielectric), absorbs some of it. How much, is dependent on the permittivity of the dielectric used. This is expressed as a numeric value (dielectric constant). Example: vacuum (the best dielectric) is 1. Teflon/ P.T.F.E.(the best of the plastics), is 2.2. The lower the numeric value, the better the insulator.

Once the dielectric is charged, it doesn't keep the charge. As soon as the voltage in the condutor drops,  it gives it back, equalising the voltages. In the case of a musical signal, this process occurs millions of times a second.

It is crucial that the dielectric is the very best that is practical, to minimise the effect of dielectric absorbtion. It is extremely damaging to the fidelity of your system, introducing time smears, hash, and other distortions.

Why an air dielectric (insulator)?

Because air has the lowest dielectric constant of any practical insulating material (1.00059), twice as good as P. T. F. E., and only fractionally worse than a vacuum. I know of no, machine made, bulk audio cable, that has a > 97% air dielectric!

All of the above is to ensure that the musical signal that exits your CD player or phono stage, arrives at your amplifier with the least possible degradation, whether it’s information lost, or, just as bad, added, by the transmitting interconnect.
