This is an unused, mint in box white stoneware pie vent, pie bird or pie funnel. It is marked by the maker The Original Mason Cash, English Kitchen Bowl Company. The Mason Company has been in existence since the 1860s in Derbyshire England.  The pie vent measures 3 1/2" long.  Pie birds were developed in the 1500s to release steam from a baking pie so the filling didn't boil over.   Provides central support for the pastry cover of savoury and fruit pies and keeps pastry crusty.    Manufactured from fully vitrified ceramic and then glazed.  Safe in oven, dishwasher, microwave or freezer.
