Item specifics
Main Color: Ebony ShaftTime Period: 1870-1910
Material: Wood & Gold
An Antique (1870-1910) Walking Stick/Cane with a nicely chased handle on an Ebony wood shaft. Original finish, original ferrule. Complete. Not perfect: someone 'erased' whatever had been engraved on the round, flat part of the handle,(photo # 6) exposing the base(?brass) metal(done before  I purchased it). The handle is very slightly loose on the shaft(just a miniscule amount of movement). Glossy finish to the shaft, though with spots of rubbing exposing the real Ebony wood underneath- this is NOT a "fake" finish. Length of the cane is 35" . The ferrule is whole, with a good solid bottom. No cracks, splits, chips or damage to the  wooden body of the shaft. Good to excellent coverage of the gold top, with only a few, small amounts of rub/wear. Clean joins, mirror-bright sections alternating with high relief, deeply intricate design areas of classical scrolls and Acanthus leaves on the main portion of the handle and 5-petaled  flowers(?wild roses), leaves and a lovely rope-like effect on the collar.  All in all, a good tactile feel in the hand, nicely balanced. Every-so-slightly curved angle along the shaft.(? from use or design.) from top to bottom.
NOTE: I am calling this wood "ebony" because the wood color underneath the shiny finish is black. Anyone with information that contradicts this correctly is invited to email me and I will post it.
There are identifying marks: a # 1 inside a diamond-shaped shield or lozenge; #1244; and a maker's mark of a script "S" with a slash through it, with what appears to be another mark above it, but that part runs into the design and I cannot make it out.(Photos #9 & 10)
       No reserve.
I purchased this in 1963 in Black Mountain, N.C.; one of two from the same shop.  I had started collecting  antiques earlier that year; this (and the other cane I am offering this week) cane was my first serious purchase with my own money as a teenager. Little did I know it would start me off on a (mumble, mumble)years- long road of discovery, adventure, "Just Missed Out" disappointments and
W A Y too big "I Want That" dreams, as well as fun finds, a few sleepers, and LOTS and L O T S of pleasure. Except for the "moving" experiences with careless "professional" moving companies. Don't get me started.  I am seriously downsizing my collection of "stuff", most of which is textiles, but I have wildly eclectic tastes so there will be many "interesting" things on offer for the next few months. Bookmark me. I am not a professional, just an avid amateur.
