Nowadays, the word "event" is thrown around all too often when
describing television programmes, but back in 1983 the debut of V: The Mini Series
was a television event in the truest sense. The appearance of gigantic
flying saucers over the world's largest cities heralds the arrival of
aliens from a distant galaxy who look human and act benevolently. Of
course, things aren't exactly what they seem, and when some suspicious
humans start to question the visitors' intentions they uncover a vast
alien conspiracy, along with some unusual culinary habits. Soon, the
visitors have enslaved the Earth under their fascist rule, and small
groups of human rebels are forced underground to fight for the freedom
of their entire species. But with the future of the planet still in
question the epic story comes to an abrupt end, forcing the viewer to
wait for the resolution in V: The Final Battle and the on-going series.
That's not to say that the original V
isn't worth the price of admission: in over three hours, it manages to
capture the spirit of the great classic science fiction of the 1950s
and 60s. The feeling of paranoia and insecurity that runs throughout
the whole thing makes it feel, at times, like an expanded episode of The Twilight Zone,
only shinier (hey, it was the 1980s). The special effects were
impressive for their day, inspiring similarly themed films in the 90s
(the gigantic flying saucers were seen again in Independence Day, and the storage area of the mothership turns up in The X Files Movie and The Matrix).
What does irritate, however, is the utter lack of subtlety in the
allegorical storyline. In fact, it could only have been made more
obvious by demanding that the entire cast wear "This is how it was in
1930s' Germany" t-shirts. But if V occasionally doesn't live up to its own high standards, it's still a remarkably high-quality slice of epic television drama.
On the DVD:
The picture is an impressive widescreen 1.85:1 ratio and the soundtrack
is adequate Dolby stereo. The DVD boasts a feature-length commentary by
writer and director Kenneth Johnson, as well as a 25-minute "Behind the
Scenes" documentary. --Robert Burrow

If
you wish to further support our experiment, testing and evaluating
E-Commerce for the benefit of our Members (Charities and Projects) and
Associates (Other Voluntary and Community Groups and their volunteers),
and cannot find what you want, not only do we sell and auction of
Amazon, and here on eBay, but we have access to many E-Commerce and
trading sites: if you can't find what your looking for, let us know
what you want, preferred condition and how much you are willing to pay:
we will look around, and keep an eye out for a very low price, as a
thank you: we will the consider introducing such an item, to see if
there is any more interest; at a higher price, to better cover our
costs. [Note: regarding this paragraph, note addendum in Squaretrade
Seal Info, below, stating that listings to be placed on relative Sales
Site to request].
If you have
any used stamps, please consider donating them (Note: regarding this
section, please note addendum in Squaretrade Seal Info below, stating
we cannot solicit payments by post: this refers to donating of used
equipment and stamps); or if in the UK, Ireland or France: Inkjet,
Laserjet, Fax (except Epson, which have no significant value),
Photocopy toners, Mobile Phones or PDA's. We will transfer at least
50% (we will increase this up to 75% when we have sufficient funds and
have started a permanent Charity-OnLine Service, and will only need to
cover our running costs); we can donate to any Charity, School, Youth
Club, or other cause of your choice (in the UK or Ireland: all we need
is a Bank A/c, Sort Code and Name of the account, unless it is one of
the many we already deal with), or even set up a system for you at
work, or within your organisation, with your own recycling account
number - in the UK and Ireland we have a freepost address for such
schemes - and you help the environment - this is another part
Charity-OnLine.
PLEASE NOTE:
While we wish to encourage sales on eBay by showing both opening and
Buy-It-Now prices are cheaper here then our Amazon zshop fixed price
alternative, the below subdomain for our Amazon shopfront is NOT hosted, as eBay Trust and Safety haven't in over 6 months agreed a REPLACEMENT to the previously eBay authourised template, in our proposal to have an agreed PRICE ONLY comparison site hosting this subdomain. This any loading of the Amazon.Charity-OnLine.ie link will result in NO Page Found Message,
until we are advised otherwise. We apologise on behalf of eBay for
this failure, and thus that we cannot currently provide an active link
- however this option cannot be enabled until an appropriate hosting of
price information, allowed by eBay's Policy can be identified, and
result in a hosting of this subdomain to an improper site, so that it
is not accidentally inferred to be in breach of Circumvention Policy
(which it is not).

thus not able to have been awarded Charitable Status in the United
States of America, nor UK; as a result we are not members of eBay's US
and UK Charitable Donations and Listings systems.
As
a Charity Support Service, however in the Republic of Ireland, the
Trustees of Federation Trust list, purchase, administer and provide for
Sale items. It should be noted that the information on the beneficiary
of the auction is usually in order to support the General Fund of
Federation Trust or to cover the costs of development, set up and
administration of the Charity-OnLine E-Commerce Project, and other
services. Only listings specifically stated for another cause, being a
member (Charity or Project), or an associate (Other Voluntary or
Community Groups), shall be administered by the Trustees using assets
earmarked or donated for such a cause by the Trustees of Federation
Trust, jointly and severally and should not be assumed to be in any
official capacity on behalf or a member, associate or Charity by virtue
of an asset administered by the Trustees through the Charity-OnLine

charitable bodies to benefit such organisations with the resources and
assets. If there is any listing or fundraising done in any Official
capacity, we will naturally provide such documentary evidence
(including Contact details, relevant Charity Number and VAT Number as
applicable) which shall be provided on any such listing and also sent
to the Compliance Section of Paypal in the USA. This shall be added to
all eBay Listings within the next 24 hours, and added to the template
for any future listings
We
have also been asked to create an affidavit that we are also not
registered or licensed in any country, and will not, and are not able
to use Paypal to accept payments for Stock, bearable bonds, or other
securities, if such a service were available to us.
Paypal
have requested us to state this obvious fact that we are not as
Trustees of Federation Trust operating in any official Capacity on
behalf of any other body - this notice shall be added to any listings
relisted and to templates for any future listings, because of a
detailed investigation into ALL Charititable bodies and Non-Profit
Organisations (including those not operating and registered in the
USA), on behalf of the United States of America Internal Revenue
Service, as a result of widespread fraud and corruption as a result of
Hurricane Katrina - where Millions of US$ was raised and did not
benefit the Humanitarian needs of the victims and survivors. As a
result of this investigation, we have spent some three weeks in
providing e-mail and photocopy of documentations of some 300+ pages,
including detailed information of our processes in Ireland, the fact
that we are not registered or set up in the UK or USA, with details of
our procedures on behalf of the one outside Charity Listing, with proof
of payment, and receipt of the proceeds, credit card statements,
statements and bills and photo id for the two Trustees based at the
home address from which the services and projects are administered, and
bills in the names of Federation Trust and the Charity-OnLine
E-Commerce Project, as well as confirmation of Tax Number, used for
offsetting sales within the European Union, at the relevant National
Standard Rate, if applicable against purchases for records of Value
Added Tax.

1: eBay cheaper then Amazon comparison:
Other sellers like lodging complaints with eBay for keeping to the Bay
authourised template which all our listings are based on - these show
our opening price here, the Buy It Now and our Amazon shop price - and
provides the informational links to shows you how much you can save
here over eBay with the links to our Amazon shop to enable you to
confirm this - so you can be assured of a good price here on eBay; 2:
Second Chance offers are using eBay's system; Postage and Handling does
not cover, but includes calculation towards Packaging, Printing, and Telephone, administration, subscription, and any other costs or fees [Re-edited, see Clarrification or (note 4:).
Postage amount in Euro charged in Sterling the Handling part covers all
the rest. This is neither circumvention, nor excessive - estimated at
1/3 of amount in Euro when Euro to Sterling was around, 0.667, tourist
rates are around 0.80, making it from around to under 20% of the total
- we do not pass or add on to this cost - it is a set rate - we save on
some packaging, by recycling packaging for opening price items; if we
save, we refund in proportion to this estimate. 3: Charity-OnLine Recycling Scheme and other Yahoogroups and charity support links -
The eBay authourised template supplies information on what
Charity-OnLine does from any surplus from your support - this includes
background information on how we work, what we support, and includes
link to provide information on our voluntary work, and informational
resources and support groups funded and administered by the Trustees of
Federation Trust and your continued support. These are informational
resources and discussion groups and, forming an integral part of the
Charity-OnLine projects and services, thus were included in the 2006
authourised eBay Template. It must be noted, that these do not link to
e-commerce facilities or groups, and in no way can be considered an
inappropriate link.
Our
fees and postage policy are stated in our listing and Squaretrade Seal
- these have often been added to and clarrified - sometimes as a result
of words being taken contrary to their context by eBay. Opening price
is calculated from, or just under the cost price. Postage and Handling
costs are given as Sterling amounts from actual cost of postage in Euro
- the difference in exchange rates covers a contribution towards
Handling: these are Packaging (we use recycled packaging, whereever
possible at near opening/cost price, and new packaging on Buy-It-Now -
which is always given as a lower amount then our Fixed rate shop price
with Amazon (this is taken from the RRP, if available, or trade price
in Ireland, for a rare and deleted item only stocked by specialist
traders) - indeed a link has been provided in the interests of
transparancy to our other shops so this and other information can be
confirmed - and is part of the original template approved by eBay),
printing eBay, Paypal and foreign exchange fees. Indeed when we have a
saving on postage, we refnd the excess equivalent in postage and
handling - so we can never be accused of excess postage fees. If
another Postage rate is wanted or used, we keep to this policy to
ensure an open and transparant system(when he exhange rate was 0.667 or
thereabouts the difference sometimes covered costs, now with exchange
rates for the Euro/Sterling at 0.8 and above, the eBay and Paypal fees
are almost never covered, and packaging, printing and foreign exchange
fees are prioritised - as the rates vary - we selected an amount which
cover some of the costs at the time, and was realistic expression of
"Handling" and is fair and most definately not excessive. Within the
EU where we have to charge and account for VAT (what Paypal call "Sales
Tax") based on the location of where the delivery address is, as this
rate varies from 15 - 25% depending on that EU Member-states standard
rate, it is calculated and given by Paypal on checkout automatically.
We do not add any other costs, or charges over what is available and
stated in a listing, unless rates given ae no longer available. Where
due to some quirk in Paypal an error is made in the calculation, we
will inform the supporter of this discrepency, and may send a Paypal
Payment Request, accordingly - to ensure that neither the supporter,
nor ourselves are out of pocket we keep this open and transparant;
refunding savings made, and sending Paypal Payment Requests for
underpayments to the costs, or at least that part of the costs we
charge as a contribution, per our policy. You can rest assured that we
do not, and will not try to make any additional money or cheat you -
but we do hope to sell above cost price, and that we cover the postage
and handling, VAT, in accordance with these open and transparant
policies.
4: We have a fixed rate calculation. Where
an amount is charged to us in Euro for postage, we pass on that amount,
given in Sterling as Postage and Packaging . Checkout Rates given are
limited to maximum price for a standard postage, a Registered method
and a Courier service to UK or elsewhere in UK listings or Ireland and
elsewhere in Irish listings - a smaller amount, say to Ireland, EU,
Rest of Europe etc may be given as per listing at cheaper rates
available, and invoiced accordingly - if a more expensive rate is
charged, it is refunded, according to this method. The difference is
given towards out of pocket costs, which may be incurred. If
you are not wanting to complete by standard postage elsewhere then
Ireland, or select a Registered, Courier or other service, we will
reduce the amounts, according to the cost (current rates are stated in
the listing). If you are in Ireland, on an UK Listing, or Registered
or Courier in the EU or Rest of Europe, or send a Book by Books Abroad
(within the EU) or International Bulk Mailing Service Priority M-Bag
(such rates other then UK are defaulted to the highest option, being
New Zealand - all other An Post Published Rates are cheaper, so please
wait until we check the listing, books abroad or local IBMS Priority
M-Bag Rate and invoice it accordingly, so we do not have to refund you! If
we are able to get a cheaper postage fee, we will pass it on and refund
it according to this set rate calculation. If a more expensive postage
rate is requested, similarly this method will be used. These include a
contribution towards costs incurred. While an item starting at opening
price and having no other bids this does not cover most of these -
items at Buy It Now or Best Offer, however may cover all costs.
Packaging or Handling and are not limited to normal costs incurred,
including Packaging, printing, telephone, administration, overheads and
membership subscriptions. We may rather then follow the £2 for 2nd to
4th Item and £1.50 per additional item thereafter, and substitute this
with expected cost - if we are able to get a cheaper rate, say if we
can posted as Large Letter, rather then Packet rate, the difference
will be refunded, according to the method. All
Normal fees and charges are in built and we do not charge directly
towards these (however if a surplus is generated from any part of a
listing, say at Buy-It Now, Best Offer or a higher bid, we will
transact internally such costs in order to ensure we comply with the
Charity Rule requiring us to administer the assets so that they do not
become wasted. Charity Specific listings all monies for the Charity
will be made to the charity after any costs incurred, and any surplus
made from P&P will accrue in a fund, resulting in extra monies
being made then simply the bid. (Case points for reference Paypal IRS
investigation into Hurricane Katrina and Charity/Not-For-Profit
accounts and proof of monies paid to National Council for the Blind (or
minimum payment for MissionFish)). We do not EVER charge any more
towards eBay, Paypal or Banking Fees for normal payment methods of
Paypal, PPPAY, Nochex, or payments into our Sterling Bank Account from
the UK from a Sterling account, or to our Euro Account in the Republic
of Ireland from a Eurozone country in Euro - however, as no fees are
charged for receiving monies under such schemes. Persons other then in
these circumstances will be required to absorb ALL fees for a transfer
and not send monies collect, as we may be charged a set fee for
receiving a smaller amount of money. If a supporter has sent us a
payment with fees attached, we will seek to recover same. As per
listing, VAT is calculated at the relevant National Rate (based on
delivery address) within the EU - Paypal calls this "Sales Tax", and is
supposed to be included at checkout. As these rates vary from 15 -
25%, this is the only stage in which VAT is actually identified, as
Paypal has all this information. A recent checkout integration issue
being dealt with by Paypal Merchant Technical Support and eBay Seller
Support has meant that VAT has not been consistently calculated and
applied. We will advise and correct this error as it occurs.
