Ebay is charging SELLING FEES from your DSR RATINGS

*Ebay's DSR Shipping Time = OUT MY DOOR*, not how long USPS takes to get it to you !!!
(I know, these things are not made clear and they do seem illogical!)

DETAILED SELLER RATINGS EXPLANATIONS:
The new Ebay DSR Ratings (Detailed Seller Ratings) have become very controversial. What seems to have started out as a good idea and tool for buyers to quickly check how a seller has been rated by previous buyers before they enter into a purchase with the seller, has turned into a vehicle that costs sellers more in fees, not at all the fault of the buyer.

It has a format of rating by stars, from 1 to 5, 5 being the best. It is a good snapshot look for buyers. What it has turned into for sellers, by ebay policies, is a rating system that directly effects their selling fees. What looks to be a good rating by a happy buyer, 4 of 5 stars (because isn't there always room for improvement if we want to be really critical- haven't we been taught this all of our lives), actually contributes negatively to a sellers fees.

The buyer looks at the five star rating and sees all 4's or better. Great, this is a seller that I can do business with. (Most sellers are going to fall into this category) However, this same rating is not good for sellers. Selling fees are then determined by a % average of all the DSR's, with a discount on selling fees for achieving them. Sellers can do everything correctly, fairly, accurately, quickly, with their best efforts, that would get 5 stars from most people, -but then have an unreasonable person with unreasonable expectations; something that gets broken in shipping- not the fault of the seller; a delay in delivery from the delivery service- not the fault of the seller- and have your DSR's fall below the % needed for selling fee discounts, and then every transaction you complete is subject to higher fees.

The thing about the selling discount fees is this- ebay changed their listing fees and final value fees. It costs less to list, but you must get the highest final value discount (calculated from the DSR's) bring your total selling fees back to what they were before the change. This means, if you are a good seller, but have a customer that just can't be satisfied, and lets be honest, they are out there (just like there are some terrible sellers), you now get penilized and EVERY transaction you have will cost more, not just the problem transaction.

The other problem is that the DSR rating categories are vague- what they seem to mean to the average person, and rightly so, is not what they mean to ebay. And if you are a buyer, would it ever occur to you that you should dig into ebay and investigate the true meaning to make sure you are being fair to the seller, no. It would not and it should not.

Now, if you are taking the time to read this, I appreciate it and here is some information DIRECTLY FROM EBAY that buyers should follow when rating:

Item as described: READ the item title AND description.

Communication Consider ONLY BUSINESS DAYS when rating this- Sellers don't always check email on weekends/holidays (many do, for great customer service, but it is business and everyone deserves a day off!!!)

Shipping Time Rate the seller ON THE TIME IT TOOK THEM TO MAIL THE ITEM, ***NOT*** the time it took you to receive the item. You shouldn t hold sellers responsible for delays in mail services, international custom delays or for the time it took for your payment to clear.

Shipping/Handling Remember that sellers MAY CHARGE ACUTAL packaging materials costs and A REASONABLE HANDLING FEE to cover the seller s time and direct costs associated with shipping. For international transactions, you may also be responsible for duties, taxes, and customs clearance fees as requested by country laws.

Now, here is some information for sellers, DIRECTLY FROM EBAY, to earn the discounts. If you recieve the 5% discount- your selling fees will now be more than the fees before the DSR ratings.

The best news for PowerSellers--high customer satisfaction as measured by your detailed seller ratings (DSRs) can now earn you 5%-15% discounts on final value fees. (I would submit to you that high customer satisfaction has always been the goal of the majority of ebay sellers. If you don't have this, will people continue to buy from you? I think not.)

Satisfied, repeat customers are key. It's important for buyers to recognize that your status as a PowerSeller signifies they can expect great service. So starting in July, a minimum score of 4.5 in all four detailed seller ratings (DSRs)--customer communication, item as described, shipping time, and shipping cost--will be a requirement for the program. (Please note- the 4.5 rating will get you the 5% discount, which will now increase your selling fees).

So, what seems to have started out as a way to let buyers see who they are buying from and what kind of buying experience they will most likely have, has turned to a vehicle that will cost sellers more. Could it weed out sellers who charge exhorbitant fees for things like shipping and handling- yes- and it should. But what is reasonable for a seller to charge for packaging materials and handling, if they do, and is approved by ebay that they can, may seem unreasonable to a buyer who has no idea how much the packaging materials actually cost (they are not cheap- and if you are a good seller you want things packed very well to survive the delivery service) and lets face it, in todays economy, we all wants things as inexpensively as we can get them.

I WOULD ASK YOU:
Unless I have REALLY messed up a listing, NEVER answered your questions, took more than 3 DAYS to get your item OUT MY DOOR, or charged more than $1 for an item that requires ALOT of peanuts and bubble wrap (not cheap), PLEASE RATE ME WITH 5 STARS IN ALL CATEGORIES. Selling on ebay is hard work, requires alot of time, the packing materials are expensive, you have ebay fees to list and final selling value fees and paypal charges a % fee for each transaction based the $ amount. To now have even higher fees based on a rating system that is flawed at best, is very discouraging for sellers who take pride in their products and customer service. If ebay wanted higher fees, they should have just made them higher. We might not like it, but it is honest, and we can all live with that. To make them higher by a rating system that is not communicated to or understood by buyers- and means one thing to buyers and has very different consequences to sellers is not a good way to conduct business.
