A tip before you buy a dive light!   If you dive in the cold dark murky waters of the UK, don't waste your money on anything under 20 watts for a main light source. ...and watts does not always mean brighter .A 8 watt energy saving bulb will produce a huge amount more of equivalent light for the same power of say a 60 watt conventional bulb...the same applies here. It might say 20 or 30 watts, but how bright is that? LEDS produce a much brighter light for the same power used to fire conventional halogen and xenon because they are more efficent You need power to cut through the gloom...you also need this power to be veriable, as anyone who drives a car knows that in fog or snow conditions , you do not use main beam as the light source splashes back at you, the same applies with particules and plankton in the water. To be able to cut the power to a lower level is critical , and gives your eyes better focus. The best light power source is variable magnetic switching, allowing you to turn down the lights when required. There is no such thing in diving as enough light, just look at what the proffesionals lug around, and if you can't afford a good primary torch now...save for one that does a proper job, don't buy anything in a rush you will regret it , and wished you had got that 500 watt  "Canon".. that the guy in front has..as you look at the gloom surronding you from your little glowing ember! However, if you are going to be a Red Sea , warm clear water diver , then you can use a good 5 watt like ours. You get what you pay for in this game, and unfortunatly its not always a good choice. Halogen and Xenon torches are less bright old technology now, The new super white breed of LED's and  HID torches are many times brighter and can penitrate darkness producng natural sunlight colours and with many times the burn time of conventional lights for the same power supply, using inexpensive batteries, unlike the mega expensive Ni cells that un suspecting buyers didn't know about when they where sold torches that used them..in some cases, the batteries cost more than the torches! When you can buy inexpensive batteries almost anywhere in the world, it doesn' make sense these days to pay a massive premium for a re-charge units and batteries that you can't replace as you have to lug all that extra weight around.
