Muslin — Volume II
JPz Emporium would like to sincerely thank everyone for the warm reception afforded our first offering of digital backgrounds on DVD, Muslin Volume 1. Your support and comments have been instrumental in this, our latest release.
Entitled Muslin Volume 2, this set consists of 216 high quality digital images developed to make available to the photographer, professional or otherwise, an extensive and affordable library of backdrops. Once again, we've turned to our team of talented graphic artists to create a distinctive collection of 33 unique designs.
You'll find an uncommon assortment of images here, each imbued with a subtle texture and range of hues. Included in this volume are both vertical and horizontal presentations. Some are designed for portraits — others have floors. A little more than half the images are draped. Quite a few are dramatically lit, and some feature seating. Whether your subject is a person or a product, large as an NBA team or small as a diamond necklace, you'll find a background to fit your needs.

(The enlarged view of all 216 backdrops will take a few moments to appear. Please be patient.)

Alternatively, to examine a low resolution contact sheet of all 216 images, click the button below. It will download a 1.9MB .pdf file (included with the DVD in order to easily view its contents). When opened, enlarging the file's window will also enlarge the images.

How does it work?
If you enjoy digital photography, you'll love this! With a little practice, it's easy as 1 - 2 - 3.
To the left, somewhat slanted, we have a picture of a girl in yellow — along with a chain link fence, some dirt, weeds...
Sometimes you just have to capture the photo as it presents itself. But what might this picture look like had we taken it in the studio? Well, let's see!

With your photo editing software, remove everything but the girl.
(The checkered pattern represents transparency. Think of it as a pane of glass. Anything you place behind it will be clearly visible and entirely unobscured.)
Now insert a background, rotate and center the subject, adjust the lighting and presto!
You've created a masterpiece!
In this example, only the image of the girl was modified. Some soft shadows were drawn around her boots, and some shading was applied. Color and contrast were slightly adjusted in order to help her fit seamlessly into the background. The backdrop itself, however, is unaltered.
Once you're familiar with your photo editing software, the procedure is no more complicated to perform than it is to describe. You can take any picture you like — the more you refine it, the nicer it looks. Explore your creativity. Nurture your inner artist. It's fun and it's rewarding!
What else shall we try?
Let's use a smaller item:
This crystal globe is only four inches in diameter, so it's going to appear tiny when placed into a full size backdrop. That might present a problem, because ultimately we'll need to enlarge not only the subject but the backdrop as well. In lower resolution images, this could introduce pixellation — an effect caused by displaying the picture at such a large size that individual pixels (small single-colored square display elements that comprise the image) are visible to the eye.
Fear not! These backdrops are all high resolution images that look terrific even when enlarged. Let's crop the picture and zoom in for a closer look:
Okay, I couldn't resist adding a touch of atmosphere around the planet. I told you it's fun!
Shouldn't we have backgrounds wide enough to accommodate the guys down at the office?

Looks like another corporate board meeting gone bad! You can't blame these guys, though. They were at the soccer field when we came along and spirited them off to the photographer's studio.
And how difficult was that, you ask? Well, first we had to remove the soccer field — you can see for yourself, here's the original:
Then, it was a simple matter of choosing the right backdrop for the occasion, adding a few shadows around the shoes, and adjusting the lighting. Easy!
What do YOU want?
As with our previous release, Muslin Volume 1, you have the power to choose. Vertical or horizontal, flatly hung or draped? How about a dramatically lit chamber or booth? Is your subject seated? Then you'll probably be able to make use of a background with a draped seat. You have options which, with a little thought and imagination, will make your pictures look special.
| There are a total of 216 images on this DVD (a CD set is available for a small surcharge of $4.95 to cover production costs). So it is likely that you will be able to find precisely the background you need in most instances.
Whether or not you are a professional, with a little creativity on your part, all your pictures will look as if they were photographed under the best conditions, right there in that beautiful studio you may (or may not as yet) own!

Have fun! Be creative!
All right, one last example. Again, the checkered pattern represents transparency, just like a window. Behind the window, we insert a backdrop. Our model is seated, so we use one of the backgrounds with a draped seat. And once again, a little strategic shading and coloring completes the illusion:
