I have seven incredible and probably unrecorded photographic images of famous actresses of the day by the contemporary (& next door studio neighbour !) of the great Dorothy Wilding - Janet Jevons. I have just listed six by Wilding from the same set and all were taken to promote the Stage Guild Costume Ball / Three Arts Club events in 1926. The majority are HAND SIGNED in ink by the sitters !! All are backstamped by either Wilding or Jevons and I have photographed them from the reverse through a bright light to confirm that.
I personally think that the Jevons are more interesting images than Wilding. It's amazing that little is known about this lady photographer.
I AM STARTING EACH PHOTO AT A MINIMUM I'M WILLING TO TAKE FOR THEM BASED ON IMAGE QUALITY, SITTER AND CONDITION.
Sixth of the seven by Jevons is :
Dorie (Doris ?) Sawyer (second of 2) - an English actress. She is listed here as having played Tandelayo in White Cargo - a role later taken by Hedy Lamaar in a 1942 film.
15.0 x 20.0 cm print on paper mount with info snipe. Shows Miss Sawyer dressed as an Italian orange picker for the Three Arts Ball on December 10th 1926. Hand signed in ink 'With every good wish...Dorie Sawyer'.
Very good condition.
Provenance: The Alec Clunes Collection.
Alec Clunes (1912-1970), father of Martin Clunes, the modern day comic actor, amassed a mind-boggling collection of theatrical ephemera, photographs and original artwork in his lifetime. He was a leading Shakespearean / classical stage actor of his day and also made a small number of notable film appearances including 'One of Our Aircraft is Missing' in 1942.
