lovely pre-war mat from Southam's of Shrewsbury
BBCS Cat No. 1 - 1935
This attractively designed mat from Southam is in pretty good condition.
The SOS side (5d a half) is virtually mint, with just a little ageing to the colour of the original board.
The Extra Stout side (3.5d a half) is also OK, the only problem being a bit of fraying to the edge around the bottom third of the mat. This does not affect the printed area at all.
It is circular, with a diameter of 10.8 cm.
Southam's Nrewery started off life as the Salop Brewery Co. Ltd. It stopped brewing in 1880 and was bought by Thomas Southam as a mineraly water factory. It was re-equipped as a brewery in 1903 and registered as Southam's Brewery Ltd in 1926.
It was acquired by Threlfall Chesters Ltd in 1966, and brewing ceased. The brewery was demolished in 1967.
Thank you for looking, and good luck in the auction.
