Offered with NO RESERVE and our usual low start price, is this beautiful little vase dating to early 19th century c1810 - possibly just a fraction earlier.
This wonderful little vase poses quite a question as to its origin. This is certainly a very, very similar pattern to that used by the Masons factory on their ironstone wares c1813, but this little beauty appears to be transluscent porcelain . It is just possible that Miles Mason (the father) actually designed this pattern and used it on his porcelain wares c1810-12, shortly before the pattern was used by his two sons who took over the factory in 1813 and used it on their newly patented Mason's patent ironstone china body. It could also be that the Mason's sons inherited a stock of their father's porcelain fancy items which they would, of course, used up because of the high cost of porcelain, using this pattern during the same period it was being used on their ironstone.
It can't be ruled out, however, that this pattern may have been used by others at some point as, once a design found great success in the marketplace, other manufacturers quickly tried followed suit - e.g. Spode, Davenport, Worcester, Derby etc., but wherever it began its life, it was certainly in one of the high quality factories.
MEASUREMENTS (go by measurements rather than pictures as items sometimes look larger than they actually are) It measures approximately 4 inches (10.2cms) in height x 2 3/4 inches (7cms) in diameter at the widest point.
CONDITION IS NOT PERFECT, but it displays beautifully with no disfiguring flaws. (more pictures below). There are several cracks to the BASE which all stop within the footrim (something like a glass marble may have been dropped in to cause this kind of crack pattern). On the inside of the neck is a short hairline and a couple of very very light, fine ones - see picture - all very minor.
The all important decoration remains in excellent condition with just a little wear (mainly only to the gilt in a couple of places).
FACTORY MARKS The base has no name unfortunately, or attribution would be easy!
A LOVELY LITTLE VASE TO ADD TO A COLLECTION OF EARLY ENGLISH PORCELAIN
