The essential components to make a homebrew Aerial (system) tuning units, ATU's as they were known.

Such units were an essential requirement for serious listeners in the hay day of radio listening. They enabled the operator to  maximise  signal  transfer from  an aerial to a receiver by placing a tunable L/C (inductance/capacitance) network between the aerial and receiver which could be peaked to the received frequency. The peak was easily determined by ear or signal strength meter. This should not be confused with the modern, so called, "magnetic balum", which is a fixed "high to low" transformer which attempts to match the high impedance of a long wire to the low impeadence input of a modern receiver, or coax if you are trying to avoid electrical noise, to maximise signal transfere. Of course, a single transformer that could accurate match from LF to HF was a holy grail which no manufacture found, as far as I am aware. It does however achieve a higher signal transfer than would be theoretically achieved without it,  as many users can testify. However , if you are a serious listener, a unit that matches your aerial system to your receiver at the received frequency has obvious advantages; but do bear in mind any improvement depends on the existing efficiency of your present  system.

Two variable capacitors, multiway switch to select coil tappings and the coil. will be supplied with  ATU magazine articles and circuits

A commercially made unit for the SWL is currently advertised in a radio magazine for £149-99; provide a case, some hardware and some time and save a fortune
