NATIVE AMERICAN - ZUNI - MULTI STONE INLAY & SILVER - CORN MAIDEN - PENDANT/PIN

We recently visited the Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico and we returned with this stunning Corn Maiden pendant/pin that was crafted by the wonderfully talented Zuni artist Madeline Beyuka.

As with most of Madeline's jewery this pendant/pin was crafted in the shape of a Corn Maiden, one the most important symbols in all of Zuni lore.

The pendant includes intricately inlaid pieces of turquoise, abalone, mother-of-pearl, spiny oyster, pipestone and black jet. The base of the pendant/pin and the Maidens's necklace are made of silver.

It 2+3/8" long and is 1+1/8" wide. It weighed in at 15 grams and has Madeline's hallmark on the back. As with much Zuni jewelry there is no stamp indicating the silver content.

Although we had been to the Zuni Pueblo several times previously this was the first visit when we had the time to stay for a few days, rather than a few hours. Fortunately for us we were able to personally meet many of the artists, each one of whom invited us into their home where we got to know them and to watch them work their magic with various types of materials. The warmth that we felt while spending time in their homes made us feel as if we were accepted as part of their families. Watching them work, in such minute detail, was a fantastic learning experience for us.

The area where they live is known as "a village of artists" and our visit definitely showed us why.

This wonderful example of genuine, handmade, Native American Indian art will certainly make a terrific addition to your jewelry collection.
