Yellow Dog Linux Operating System For PS3 - Version 6.0
VERSION 6 - JUST RELEASED! IF YOU HAVE LINUX ALREADY OR NOT YOU SHOULD HAVE THIS VERSION ON YOUR PS3 AS IT IS SUPERIOR TO VERSION 5!
Ever wondered what the 'Install Other OS' option is in your PS3 menu, well, this is the product to install. Fully supported by Sony (so certainly will not void any warranties etc) and is designed specifically for the PS3. There are other packages out there (ie Fedora, Ubantu etc) but these are designed for all PPC processors (ie the Mac before it changed to the Intel processor). Yellow Dog Linux is fully developed for the PS3 so any upgrades etc will be for specifically for this and not other systems. In my opinion there is no other alternative Operating System other than Yellow Dog Linux.
Package includes;
Yellow Dog Linux Operating System on DVD - Free of charge
PS3 Bootloader - Free of charge
Full Installation Guide
Email Support (in case you run into difficulties) - Guaranteed response within 24 hours
As part of an agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated, Terra Soft Solutions announced last year the release of Yellow Dog Linux for the PlayStation 3. Terra Soft has also partnered with RapidMind to make application development for the PS3/Cell architecture easier.
This is totally legal and legit. In fact if you go to the 'Settings' area on your PS3, you get the option to 'Install Other Operating System'. Sony have become more open minded into letting you do what you like with the equipment you have purchased.
There are a couple other distributions out for the PS3, but Yellow Dog Linux 6 (based on Red Hat Linux source code) offers the most features, and — for the time being looks to be the distro to install if you are curious.
If you are curious about having a full Linux box right inside your PS3, I encourage you to try it out. You can always format the hard drive later, and it will be like you never had Linux installed in the first place.
This is Version 6 and comes with fully functioning wi-fi out of the box. No downloading extra kernels like you need to with Version 5. It takes a little configuration but all is explained in the installation guide.
Having linux on your ps3 will allow you to everything that you would be able to do with a PC. This includes watching different movie formats such as divx, avi, xvid etc. You will be able to browse the internet using Firefox, listen to music, play games, type up home work and much more.
This version is a lot easier to configure your resolution. It is easier to install on a Standard Definition TV than version 5, it takes a little more configuration than a HDTV but all is explained in the installation guide provided. It also install very easily on a High definition TV and is easy to use such resolutions as 420i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. These resolutions are chosen at the start of the installation so need little configuration.
With over 2000 applications available with Linux, there are often several available applications for each desired function. In the interest of making simple the use of Yellow Dog Linux for first-time, even advanced users, they have created a set of packages installed by default (an advanced installation option is available) which offer all that you need to enjoy your Linux desktop experience --without the mess.
Remember, the packages listed below are just a small selection of the vast quantity available to you, included with the YDL Install DVD and through on-line resources. While YDL v6.x installs and defaults to E17, the Gnome desktop is installed by default and KDE may be selected during YDL installation or installed at a later time.
Updating and Installing Additional Applications You may use the command line yum, the graphical Pirut (replacement for 'system-config-install') to install additional applications from the YDL Install DVD, or Pup (replacement for Up2Date) to install applications from the internet. These may be apps built for KDE, apps built for Gnome or the myriad of applications that are available from repositories such as Freshmeat, FreshRPMS, TuCows, and SourceForge.
