What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate is a type of tea, made from died leaves and stems from a yerba mate plant. It is slightly less potent than coffee and much gentler on the stomach. See my shop for all the brands, types and accessories described below.

The infusion is traditionally prepared by steeping the tea leaves in very hot water rather than boiling water like black tea of coffee. A hollow gourd (mate in Spanish or cabaça or cuia in Portuguese) made from a dried fruit casing or wood (or even horn) is normally used. it is filled nearly to the top with tea leaves, then each time water is poured in, the drinker sips through a metal straw (bombilla in Spanish, bomba or canudo in Portuguese).

It is an important, common social practice in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, eastern Chile, southern Bolivia and Brazil. Drinkers in these countries usually share the mate, each taking turns to drink, with one person serving from a flask.

More recently it has become popular in the rest of the world, especially due to the many health benefits of drinking Yerba Mate. These include:

  • Aids Weight loss: It is thermogenic, and increases the rate at which fat is burned. It also surpresses the appetite and makes you feel full
  • Antioxidant: Helps to "mop up" free radicals
  • Contains vitamins and minerals: Includes Vitamin C, Potassium, Thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Carotene, Theobromine, Theophylline, Trigelline
  • Stimulates the body and mind
  • Strengthens the heart
  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Aids digestion
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Aids memory and concentration
Which Yerba Mate should I buy?

Yerba Mate can be mild, strong, sweet, bitter, flavoured.. here is a quick guide to help you choose. Remember you can always make your own blend by combining different types (this is common practice in South America)

With Stems (con palos) – This is a milder type and contains small, chopped up stems, so the infusion isn't as strong or bitter. More popular in Brazil and Argentina. The very mildest type is the Paraguayan brands which have a higher percentage of stems, and is suitable to be made with hot or cold water, or with juice (Paraguayan style). GOOD FOR BEGINNERS!!

Without Stems (sin palos) – This will brew a stronger tea and is more popular in Uruguay. It also has a more intense flavour, and if you are after a more bitter taste, you would be best to choose this type.

Sweetened (Endulzada) – This can be achieve by adding sugar or sweetener to the gourd, but you can also buy ready sweetened yerba for a more consistent infusion. It is still dietetic

Flavoured (Saborizada) – This is a popular choice, and many flavours are available. The most popular are lemon ro organge, but there are also grapefruit, honey, citrus, herbal, mint, eucalyptus, peach, apple... even coffee! Flavoured yerba is especially nice when sweetened. GOOD FOR BEGINNERS!

Tea bags (Cocido/Saquitos) – These have the same taste as traditionally brewed yerba mate, but are easy to use. They are also available in flavoured varieties. GOOD FOR BEGINNERS!

Specialist – Also available are antiacid, organic, low caffeine, extra vitamin content

How do I prepare Yerba Mate in the traditional way?

  • You need Yerba Mate, a gourd, and a bombilla (metal straw with a filter at one end). There are also many video guides on the internet if you get stuck!
  • Boil water, but try to switch off the kettle before it reaches absolutely boiling, this will prevent the tea leaves from burning, and becoming very bitter
  • Fill your gourd (mate) nearly to the top. Cover with the palm of your hand, then tip upside down, shake, and bring back to upright. This will get rid of the very fine “yerba dust”. When you return to upright, leave one side with less yerba than the other side. This is where you will serve from first
  • “Dig” the bombilla (straw) in. Once there, try not to move as the taste will be very bitter.
  • Fill with hot water and drink through the bombilla and repeat
  • The first may be cold, bitter and quite horrible. But as you continue, the flavour becomes nice. As the flavour “wears” out in one area of the gourd, you can move the bombilla around.
  • To be really traditional, share a round with friends or family
