Xmas Snow 1896 Big Ben Westminster London Watercolour

Description: An excellent London townscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed Abbott and dating circa 1920. Framed - approx 12 X 9 inches (30.48 X 22.86cm). This is an excellent English Traditional watercolour dating from the 1920s. The townscape depicts one of a series of beautifully captured nostalgic London street scenes - Big Ben circa 1892. The snow covered London Street scene is dominated by the Houses of Parliament rising almost 100 meters into the sky. In the foreground, busy horse drawn carriages omnibus and pedestrians make their way through the Christmas snow. The gas lamps glow. The tower was raised as a part of Charles Barry's design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire on the night of 22 October 1834. However, although Barry was the chief architect of the palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, his last design before his final descent into madness and death. Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry's last visit to him to collect the drawings: "I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful." The tower is designed in Pugin's celebrated Gothic Revival style. The work is signed Abbott lower left.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1920.

Condition: Excellent with only minor chipping to frame.
