A very rare Odette desk lamp variant designed by the Bauhaus designer Wolfgang Tumpel for Elekto-Waldmann, 1961/2An extremely scarce, elegant and striking lamp was designed by arguably one of the most overlooked designers of the Modern Movement. As member of the Staatliches Bauhaus metalwork department at Wiemar, Wolfgang Tümpel worked in close
collaboration with modernist luminaries Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Christian
Dell, Marianne Brandt, Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Hans Przyrembel.
He also collaborated with Oskar Schlemmer in the school's famously
avantgarde theatre workshop. This fabulous writing desk lamp was designed in the early 1960s for the Elektro-Waldmann company, Schwenningen, Germany. The more commonly found larger version of this lamp is documented in the catalogue for the famous 1968 Bauhaus retrospective held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (see final photo). Materials: Ivory coloured lacquered steel and chrome, with adjustable arm and shade and separate colour coded on and off switches in the base. With original maker's label to the underside. Condition: The lamp is in very good original condition with expected minor traces of wear to the surface and a chip to one corner of the base. It has obviously been well handled over the decades. The wiring has been renewed at some stage and as you can see the lamp works. However, as with all vintage electrical items, it must be inspected by a qualified electrician before use. Please see my note below concerning the sale of all vintage electrical items. Size: The lamp stands at around 200mm in height. Payment and Postage Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means such as bank transfer in GBP£. All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days. Unfortunately it has become necessary to offer only tracked forms of postage for high value items. This is because of the increasing number of instances of attempted fraud and I'm acting on unequivocal advice that I have received from eBay and Paypal. Please be assured that the postage options shown are calculated at cost, with a minimal handling fee to cover packaging materials for larger items. I always pack to a professional standard; please see my feedback page for customer testimonies. If you have any questions about any of this please contact me. Non-payment All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder. Condition of items Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs. Vintage electrical items Vintage electrical items are sold in their original condition without electrical guarantee, so must be safety checked by an electrician before use in the country of intended use. Returns Returns are possible, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. The buyer is responsible for return carriage costs. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this. If there is anything I haven't covered please don't hesitate to contact me. Best of luck bidding! |
