DETAILS OF ITEM
Each piece measures 1.5" high and 3.5" wide. This piece depicts a very famous monkey trio made out of cast iron and finished with gleaming gold. This famous three monkeys are part of set of 8 transoms that decorate the sable of Nikko Shinto shrine to house the sacred white horse because monkeys are thought to protect the God’s messenger, the white horse, from harms way.
In Chinese and Japanese artwork, the monkey is often portrayed with the horse. This symbolism stems from the Chinese classical novel called "Journey to the West" originally published in the 1590’s during the Ming Dynasty. In the story, the Jade Emperor appoints the Magical Monkey King, Sun Wukong, to the post of "Protector of Horses." In Japan, the monkey's role in guarding against demons originates from the Japanese word for monkey (Saru), which is a homonym for the Japanese word "to expel." Monkeys are symbol of good luck in Japan and popular motif.
By itself, this heavy figurine weighs one pound since it is solid iron. The condition is very good and its age is from the 1970's.
