William Wardlaw Laing Neo-Classical Girl Watercolour

Description: An exquisite portrait watercolour on artist's paper, signed "William Laing" and dating circa 1900. Framed - approx 30 X 24 inches (76.2 X 60.96cm). This is an exquisite English Neo-Classical watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The portrait depicts the most beautifully executed study of a young Greek maiden standing in a sunny cobbled courtyard. She carries a large basket of pomegranates and stands, bare footed, holding one up in her right hand as a gesture of an offering. This beautiful young woman is dressed in a sheer wrap around skirt and floating bodice. Her fresh complexion mirrors her youth having an air of innocence. To the right an olive tree grows and to the left stands a well, the vessel suspended from branches. Beyone a Corinthian pillared Parthenon style building stands beneath the bright blue Meditteranean sky. The painting is titled, in manuscript, verso "Pomegranates - William Laing" with a Liverpool address. An exquisite watercolour, utterly enchanting. The work is signed "William Laing" lower right.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1900.

Artist Biography: William Wardlaw Laing (fl.1873-1922) - one of the 'Last Romantics' "Last Classicists" of the late 19th Century along with artists such as William Oliver, Henry Thomas Schafer and Oliver Rhys. Their neo-classical romanticist subjects incorporated the mythology, history and legends of classical Greece and Rome.

Framing: Contemporary ovolo moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a gilt mount.

Condition: Excellent. The painting retains good colour, having one or two minor marks which only adds to the character and authenticity of the piece. The heavy gesso frame has a few chips, dings and pieces of moulding missing, consistent with this type of delicate material.
