William Tyndale, English reformer and Bible translator, graduated in 1515 from Oxford. There he studied the Scriptures in Greek and Hebrew. At the age of thirty, he had committed his life to translating the Bible from the original language into English. In 1524, Tyndale left England for Germany because the English church strongly opposed putting the Bible into the hands of the laity. He completed his translation of the New Testament in 1525. Fifteen thousand copies, in six editions, were smuggled into England between 1525 and 1530. Tyndale then began work on a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament, but did not live long enough to complete his task. He had, however, translated the "Pentateuch," "Jonah," and some historical books.
In May 1535, Tyndale was arrested and imprisoned. While in prison, a friend of his, Miles Coverdale, completed an entire Bible in English -- based on Tyndale's translation of the New and some Old Testament books. After a year in prison, Tyndale was tried, condemned, strangled, and then burned at the stake. His final words were: "Lord, open the King of England's eyes."
