An original full sized First World War medal pair awarded to Captain Andrew Gray Carment who served during the Great War with the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Andrew Gray Carment was born in India in 1873. He received his medical training at the University of Edinburgh, gaining a M.B., C.M. in 1896, B.Sc. in 1909, and M.D. in 1911. He was D.P.H., R.C.P.S. Edinburgh and R.F.P.S. Glasgow, 1920. During the Great War he was appointed a Temporary Lieutenant, R.A.M.C., October 1916 and Temporary Captain, October 1917. Served in East Africa, Malta, Macedonia and North Russia (August-October 1918). In the 1924 Medical Register his address is given as Tulagi on the British Solomon Island Protectorate.

Interesting Medal Index Card which shows that he applied for the 1914 Star from 3rd Western General Hospital (Cardiff), this application was rejected because ' Capt Carment did not appear to have served on the establishment of a unit of the British Force in Eastern Africa during the qualifying period he is ineligible for award of 1914 - 15 Star'

Research notes with the medals show that he served on the Naval Wounded Hospital Ship Gascon in Oct 1914 and with the British East Africa Expeditionary Force Jan 1916 to July 1916.

Notes also state that he was a Prisoner Of War in German East Africa in August 1914.

He made the first antimalarial survey of Struma Vally and British positions in the Krusha Balkans.

He was invalided home from Russia in October 1918, MIC shows his contact address as being Bedford House Officers Hospital, Cardiff and later Talbot Terrace, Scotstounhill, Glasgow.

An interesting medal pair well worth some more research.
