About Wilbur Smith
Wilbur Smith was born in Central Africa in 1933. He was educated at Michaelhouse and Rhodes University. He became a full-time writer in 1964 after the successful publication of WHEN THE LION FEEDS, and has since written nearly thirty novels, all meticulously researched on his numerous expeditions worldwide. His books are now translated into twenty-six languages.

Wilbur Smith lives in London and continues to have an abiding concern for the peoples and wildlife of his native continent, an interest strongly reflected in his novels.

RIVER GOD

(The first book in the Ancient Egyptian series)

Ancient Egypt is the land of the Pharaohs, a kingdom built on gold as well as a legend shattered by greed. Now, the Valley of the Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood as weak men inherit the cherished crown. In the city of Thebes at the Festival of Osiris, loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather to pay homage to their leader. But Taita - a wise and formidably gifted eunuch slave, sees him only as a symbol of a kingdom's fading glory. Beside Taita stand his proteges, Lostris, daughter of Lord Intef, beautiful beyond her fourteen years; and Tanus, proud, young army officer, who has vowed to avenge the death - at Intef's hand - of his father, and seize Lostris as his prize. Together they share a dream - to restore the majesty of the Pharaoh of Pharaohs on the glittering banks of the Nile.

This is a definate must read for all fans of adventure, intrigue, romance, action and a whole host of other genres.
River God combines an enthralling storyline, unforgetable characters and intense, bloody combat.
It's an exciting account of the egyptians' war with the hyksos, vividly showing us the world of the nile valley through the eyes of the humble, slave Taita. The sheer detail of the egyptians' way of life- their clothes, weapons, food etc really transports you back to the days of pharoahs and pyramids.
It's a long, detailed book that never bores or seems too brief.
There are plenty of epic battles, violence and other boyish features, but at heart it's a tragedy- an unusual love triangle between the princess Lostris, the warrior Tanus and Taita, the slave and eeunuch. It's a heart rending tale of an impossible love between a slave and a princess that caused one of the only times I have ever cried.

Brilliant stuff!

EAGLE IN THE SKY
This book is your typical Wilbur Smith book. It starts with the first flying lesson of a teenage David Morgan and then takes you through his life to his mid/late twenties.
It just so happens that David is from a rich family and so can do what he likes.
He does this by travelling to Europe from his native Africa to try and find his way in life. If only we all had enough money to do this.
There he meets the love of his life and then everything goes sweetly. But being a Wilbur Smith book it doesn't go smoothly at all.
This is where the rollercoaster ride begins with ups and downs.
I particularly liked a chase section in the latter part of the book that had me on the edge of my seat.
The only downer is that the story ends with so much more of David's life to live that you just wish it continued.

The first part of the book is partly set in Israel with David joining the Israeli Air Force. This made the book very relevant to current events with Israel currently bombing targets outside of its borders. Therefore the topical nature of the book (at time of writing) makes it an excellent book to read.
