WHEN IT WAS DARK - THE STORY OF A GREAT CONSPIRACY by Guy Thorne. 427 page hardback book, published in 1925 by Stanley Paul & Co., London. Illustrated with a frontispiece plate.
Brief details: "In 1903, an obscure writer published a thriller which, against all expectation, sold in huge quantities, was read by everybody and provoked feverish discussion; it had clearly touched a nerve. The church was convulsed and bishops and lesser clergy preached passionate sermons about it. The (now forgotten) book was When it Was Dark by Guy Thorne, and its subject was a sinister conspiracy at a very high level that affected a central tenet of the Christian faith. So far, so familiar ...
However, the conspiracy at the centre of this thriller is driven not by malign forces in the church hierarchy, but by international, atheistic capitalism, embodied in the imposing, sinister person of Constantine Schuabe, an immensely powerful multi-millionaire MP and newspaper magnate, and, this being a typically anti-semitic Edwardian thriller, a Jew. The conspiracy he masterminds is intended to discredit and destroy the Christian faith - by establishing that, 'when the disciples thought that Christ had risen from the dead, they were victims of a well-meant deception by Joseph of Arimathea. There had been no Resurrection. The body had merely been secretly transferred from one tomb to another. The entire Christian world had been the victim of this hoax..." The Observer
