Great Pianists

What is it about the life of a pianist that sets him/her apart from others? What is being a pianist all about? What is it like to feel like a pianist? To be referred to as a “pianist?”

Mostly, a pianist loves the piano in a very deep and profound way. A pianist finds beauty, sadness, adventure, rapture, and overall great solace in being able to sit down and let his/her emotions spill forth like a waterfall.

Being a pianist is a gift. It’s a gift to oneself, and a gift to others in the world who love to listen to the piano. It’s almost like a pianist can go within when in need of communication with the Almighty; meaning the truly gifted pianist has the ability to connect on a spiritual level with the source of all music, and become one with It. This happens when the pianist is totally in love with the music he is playing, whether I front of an audience or alone. Sometimes a pianist wants it all for himself, and other times being a great pianist is all about sharing that flow from within with the audiences of the world in vulnerable, yet exciting ways.
This is a euphoric state that is a truly blessed place to experience. Of course, not only the pianist is able to experience this, but anyone totally in love with what they are doing can create this for themselves.

What makes a “great” pianist, or better said a world re-known pianist? Is it the mastery of technical skills that make the pianist stand out? Or is it the amount of feeling, or emotion the pianist generates while performing? Does a great pianist have to play in a spectacular manner, or can he be less technically proficient, and still make the grade?

It seems it all depends on the type/genre of music you are talking about. The strictly classical pianist usually needs, and highly admires, the idea that strong facility and technique is an absolute must to be considered a great pianist, while improvisation is not required.

Vladimir Samoylovich Horowitz

(Hebrew: ולדימיר הורוביץ; Russian: Владимир Самойлович Горовиц, Vladimir Samojlovič Gorovits; Ukrainian: Володимир Самійлович Горовиць, Volodymyr Samiylovich Horovyts) (1 October 1903 – 5 November 1989) was a Russian-American pianist. In his prime, he was considered one of the most distinguished pianists of any age. His technique, use of tone color and the excitement of his playing are legendary. Though sometimes criticized for being overly mannered and showy, he has a huge and passionate following and is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century

Vladimir Vladimirovich Sofronitsky

Russian: Владимир Владимирович Софроницкий, Vladimir Sofronitskij; May 8 [O.S. April 25] 1901 – August 26, 1961) was a Russian pianist, best known as an interpreter of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin.

Little known in the Western Hemisphere due to almost complete absence of concert tours and recordings, Sofronitsky was held to the highest regards in his native land. Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels looked up to Sofronitsky as their master, and famously, when Sofronitsky once drunkenly proclaimed the former to be a genius, Richter toasted him to be a god. Gilels was reputed to say that "The greatest pianist in the world has died" upon hearing Sofronitsky's death.

Few of Sofronitsky's recordings are available in the West. One noteworthy release, in BMG's "Russian Piano School" series, contains a complete concert, including a wonderful, dreamy, mercurial account of Robert Schumann's Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 11. His issue in Phillips's Great Pianists of the Twentieth Century features Chopin Mazurkas and Waltzes on the first CD, and some of his legendary Scriabin on the second, including the 9th and 10th sonatas and a staggering Vers la Flamme. Denon Classics' Japanese Vladimir Sofronitsky Edition is a series of 15 CDs, 10 of which remain in print.
