We have now found out more information about this brooch ...

This is probably a Sweetheart Brooch. It would of belonged to a member of the 51st Infantry Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, formed in Edmonton, Alberta early in 1915. Their first Overseas draft of 250 men was sent to fight in France in the Summer of that year, the rest of the battalion following in 1916. The battalion itself was disbanded shortly thereafter.
