Here's an amazing find - a pre World War II, "Autoway Postal Scale", in fine working order!
The Autoway was made in England by Salter. Its design registration number dates to 1933/34, which makes it 70+ years old and still going strong.
The scale is in reasonable condition for its age:
- The enamel is chipped in places, particularly on the base, but there's more than enough red left to readily identify this as something from the postal system.
- The clear plastic cover that protects the gauge is cracked on one side. Two of the screws that hold the chrome strip in place at the base have stripped their threads.
- The zero-adjust knob works fine. Remarkably, the scale still weighs accurately.
The top has a list of the postage rates effective 1st May, 1940, but the paper and print look too good to be original. Regardless, it adds a nice touch to the Autoway.
Here's a chance to pick up a unique Christmas present for someone who collects vintage weighing machines, or for someone who simply appreciates finely crafted instruments with historical significance!
Dimensions: The Autoway is 200mm wide and 105mm deep at its extreme points. It stands 200mm tall.
