Note to eBay:
This listing adheres to all eBay requirements for the listing of items containing vintage ivory parts. The ivory on these pipes is pre-1900 and a copy of the Export Certificate as issued by DEFRA is included at the bottom of this listing.

The set of pipes being offered here is ready to ship now!  This pipe has been identified as a set of J & R Glen bagpipes from their combing, known history and markings.  These pipes are known to be of circa 1900 vintage, are made of ebony, and have plain nickel ferrules, together with genuine ivory projecting mounts, ringcaps, bushes and blowstick band.

These pipes are in absolutely immaculate condition, having undergone a full cosmetic refurbishment, and are free from any defects, warps or cracks in the ebony timber.  The ebony on these pipes has been buffed and polished rather than varnished giving these pipes a beautiful matt finish!

If any potential purchaser is unaware of the quality of genuine J & R Glen pipes, I can only suggest a little research before bidding to ensure these are what you want.  Being an Edinburgh made instrument the external lines on this instrument are finer, and the tone mellower, than that of the more famous Glasgow makers.  These qualities lend this instrument to being a fine solo pipe although it would be equally at home in any band!  The most identifying cosmetic feature of these pipes is the smaller external diameter of the projecting mounts.  One additional feature these pipes have, which is something J & R Glen sometimes added, is an ivory band on the blowstick immediately below the mouthpiece.  Although only a small point it is a nice touch!

These pipes are completely original in every respect.  The nickel ferrules, although repolished, are those originally mounted on these pipes.  Although not apparent from the photos, these nickel ferrules have a few minor dents which would not polish out.  To some people, this adds authenticity to the instrument.

The only 2 flaws I can find on these pipes are in the vintage ivory.  Firstly, there are 2 age lines on the bass drone rincap.  The second flaw is in the ringcap of one of the tenor drones which has a few minor chips.  Scroll down to see a photo of these 2 flaws.  Minor flaws like this are only to be expected on ivory in excess of 110 years old!

All in all this is an excellent vintage pipe with that specific mellow tone that can only come from an aged set of J & R GLEN pipes! The tone of these pipes can only be described as "Outstanding!" In terms of condition and tone, I think it unlikely you will find a better set of J & R GLEN pipes currently available for sale!

These pipes come as a set of sticks [drones & stocks] only, as it is thought these pipes will only be purchased by an experienced piper with his own choices in respect of bag, reeds, etc.  However, should additional accessories be required these can be supplied at cost.  Accessories you may wish to consider are:

  Bannantyne (Goretex/hide) zipper pipe bag - £110.00

Ezeedrone/Selbie/Balance Tone/Shepherd synthetic drone reeds - £40.00
Black Velvet pipe bag cover - £30.00
Black silk cords - £20.00
New War-Mac African blackwood pipe chanter - £140.00
"Used" 1980 Wm Sinclair African blackwood pipe chanter - £160.00

Should any other specialist accesories, be required, these can be supplied seperately.  Should you have any questions regarding these pipes, or pipes in general, please e-mail me! (Being a piper I can answer all questions!)

Note 1 - Delivery will be made once payment has cleared.  (Payment accepted by UK cheque, by bank draft/Cashier's cheque in all major currencies and by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) through my own merchant account.)

Note 2 - As these bagpipes were made circa 1900 the ivory on these pipes does not contravene the CITES legislation regarding post-1986 ivory.  A copy of the Article 10 certificate issued by DEFRA for the pipes is below.

Note to Bidders:  This is one of 9 vintage sets of pipes I currently have listed, the other sets being differently mounted and/or from different makers.  Please check my other auctions if you think these pipes might be more to your liking.
