Beautiful tiny painting of lovers... he has a golden halo and her costume is picked out in gold. It's very detailed: you can see her legs faintly through her gauzy skirt. Someone will know better than me who it represents. It measures 44mm x 91mm (approx 1.75 x 3.5 inches.) and is about 2mm thick, so it feels like a little tile with a hand-sawn reverse side. It is painted on a smoothed piece of bone that looks like ivory, but it probably is not, as I think it was bought in India in the early half of 20th Century.... so not strictly antique, but there was no other sensible category to put it in! It was glued more recently, and badly, onto a piece of silk stretched on card...you can see various glues on the back, would come off with solvent but would rather not touch it. The front is unblemished. |
