A Vintage Flat Griddle or Hot-Plate from our collection of kitchenalia.
Often called "bakestones" from years gone by when they would be made from a flat stone - these are great for making drop scones, soda breads, pancakes, crepes or even frying eggs.
I have had this one for over 10 years now and it had been in regular use until very recently. As you will see from the photos it is in very good condition. We send all of our items out to be professionally cleaned and when this came back I was shocked to see how good it looks. Over the years of use it had build up a fair amount of burnt in butter and now it really is spotless. You would never realise how many rock cakes and scones I have made on this over the years.
It does have a few very small scratches, but nothing that draws the eye, or that you would not expect on a period piece such as this.
The griddle plate has a black Bakelite handle which is held onto the support by screws. The support is riveted to the plate in such away as to allow it to hinge easily so it can be moved out of the way for storage. When the handle is requires in the upright a little piece of tube drops into slots in the plate to stop it from falling to the down position. Both rivets are in good condition and secure.
The plate is made from cast aluminium and measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and 0.1875 inch thick with a 0.375 inch lip around the edge. (Metric sizes - measures approximately 305mm in diameter and 4.5mm thick with a 10mm lip around the edge).
This griddle plate can be used on a Gas hob, a halogen hob, an AGA or Rayburn range of even an open fire!
Whoever buys this will probably find they use it more often than they first thought - I got it off a friend as a present; after I said I wanted to try to bake some "drop scones" - she popped round a couple of days later with the recipe and this little beauty. From then until very recently it sat on my beloved AGA and was used for all sorts of delicacies.
It is not stamped up with any branding - however, I can tell you that it is very well made and will serve whoever wins it for plenty of years to come.
As said earlier it has been de-scaled and cleaned and is ready for use - However, I would recommend that the winning bidder coats the cooking surface in either nut oil or a good knob of butter to "seal the plate" prior to cooking.
