Vintage Art Deco Lime Washed Oak Bedroom Suite - Restoration Project

Circa 1940s

A very unusual vintage bedroom suite, based on upon wartime utility design, but with some lovely simple Art Deco detailing in the handles, applique and moulding. This is based upon the plywood veneer panel construction of wartime economy Utility furniture. It is possibly just post war, when the stricter restrictions were being lifted.

Unfortunately a friend has had this suite stored away for many years, and has now found all three pieces have suffered bad woodworm attack. They are still structurally sound.

I am currently treating the woodworm. The buyer will have to continue treatment (and maintain vigilance) and fill all the worm holes, which do intrude onto the original finish. I don't think, in all honesty, that the original finish can be retained, and it would probably be wise to consider this a re-finishing or re-painting job.

The finish of the wardrobe and dressing table are worst affected. The chest of drawers is only affected by worm holes on the baseboard - underneath, and out of sight. I did briefly consider selling this item separately, as this piece alone is in good condition and could be kept with the original finish.

At very least you could guage your bids on the chest of drawers on it's own - and there is intrinsic value in the handles on the other pieces. Or you could apply a paint finish to all three.

Lighter items will cost less. You can estimate for lighter packages pro-rata. For example, the most you will pay for a 1.0 kg package (Under 60 cm) is £7.00 GBP to Europe or £12.00 GBP to Worldwide.

I am happy to ship heavy items overseas

Items over 2.0 kg weight & large items (Over 60 cm) are in a different international postage category. I recommend that overseas bidders contact me for a shipping estimate, to avoid embarrassing surprises. These items can get quite expensive to ship worldwide as the weight or volume increases. I often use UPS or DHL Couriers, as they are usually cheaper and far quicker than the old surface mail category.

Do I offer insurance and 'Signed for' delivery?

UK signed for £0.75 Extra: Overseas Air Mail signed for £3.70 Extra.

I always ask buyers if they want 'signed for' delivery. If you choose not to pay for this, then I personally believe you are tacitly agreeing to join me in taking a small risk. I therefore do not like buyers that resort immediately the Paypal reversal of funds process without contacting me first. I will always help as much as I can with loss or breakage claims.

I always retain proof of postage, but Ebay and Paypal rules technically insist on proof of delivery. This means that to fully protect myself, I should also insist on 'signed for' postage. This is absurd, as it would raise the postage cost on every item - especially on small items. In reality the risk is small, as losses are rare, and I pack as carefully as I can to avoid breakage. Besides, there is already a little known, low level, insurance cover on UK postage and airmail, but it is a time consuming process to claim. I therefore personally interpret this situation to mean that, if you are happy with the initial risk, you will also be patient if it comes to extracting a basic insurance claim from the Post Office.
