Village Scene Original Watercolour Painting Follower of Henry John Sylvester Stannard RBA ( 1870 - 1951) An extremely fine watercolour painting by a follower of Henry John Sylvester Stannard. The painting depicts a rural wooded village scene with ducks near a pond and is a highly accomplished work. The painting dates to within Stannard's lifetime, it is very much in Stannard's style depicting cottages, in a rural scene and it bears a monogram lower right. The painting is in very fine condition the colours fresh and well preserved and there are only very minor imperfections due to age. The painting is mounted behind glass and is presented in a fine gilt frame. This painting is signed with a monogram lower right. A fine painting that would grace any home or collection. Stannard's work sells for many thousands of pounds at auction please see the auction results in the snap shots below. Henry John Sylvester Stannard was born in London on the 12th July 1870 and specialised in watercolour, depicting the English landscape, cottages and gardens. He was the son of Henry Stannard, R.A. (1844-1920) and was educated in Bedford and studied Art at South Kensington where he won his Art Teachers Diploma at the age of 16. Before his marriage, Stannard resided at Harpur Place, Bedford but in 1894 he moved to Flitwick. He became very well known in the area and did a great deal of charity work. In 1896 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and he was also the founder of the Harpers Art Society, Bedford in 1895, and the inventor of the Sylvester Stannard Straining-Board for Watercolour Paper. As well as his reputation as an accomplished artist at this time, Stannard also became well known as a lecturer, teacher and judge of art exhibitions. His international career began after he received interest and patronage from the British Royal family. He painted many pictures of their Sandringham estates and he received many personal commissions from them. Despite his fame, Stannard still supported local exhibitions including the Bedford Society of Artists and his father's exhibitions in Harpur Street. In 1939 he founded the Midland Sketch Club. It was at the 1950 annual exhibition of this club (in the Bunyan Room of Bedford Public Library) that Stannard exhibited his last works. Stannard died on the 21st January 1951 at Bedford Hospital. Examples of his work may be found in many Museums and Art Galleries

Art as an Investment In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts. “Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil. Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn. Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.
