On first viewing the propaganda style commentary and military band soundtrack can grate-you are left with the impression that numerous US military units (all of whom seem to be "the best of the best") moved from one glorious victory to the next with almost total impunity.on second viewing you will find yourself appreciating the wealth of genuine footage to be had.indeed, this is the dvd's strength.it will also improve the viewers knowledge of the war/geography of Vietnam, including the downright untrue 'spin' that the US government put on the footage to sell the war to the dispirited US public. YOU ARE BIDDING ON A 2 DVD LOT CONTAINING ONE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING DVD 1 - VIETNAM 1965-1967 BATTLE HELL The Vietnam War arose out of a civil war between two competing philosophies. The south Vietnamese did not want to be part of the pro-Communist system being set up by the north so the country was divided along the 17th parallel of latitude. Direct American involvement in support of the South began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, the longest and most unpopular war, to date, Americans have ever fought. Over fifty-eight thousand Americans lost their lives whilst the losses to the Vietnamese people were appalling. Vietnam, Battle Hell is a remarkable record of the American Administration's presentation of events, at the time, to support their cause which most would believe had little in common with a war that films such as 'The Deerhunter' subsequently portrayed with graphic reality. The Sky Soldiers, the fighting 173rd Airborne Brigade featuring Huey Gunships and their "Cowboys" against the VC in the Iron Triangle, Operation Marauder, Dexter, Yorktown & Aurora. The Black Horse Regiment, the famed 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Operations Thunderhorse and Elephant's Ear that took these hell-for-leather fighting men from sweating jungles to the Tet Offensive and bitter street fighting in Bien Hua and Saigon. The Air Mobile Division of the battling 1st Cavalry proved the effectiveness of the helicopter in bloody battle. 9th Vietcong Main Force Division - the 173rd discovered this captured enemy newsreel depicting ambush assault tactics of the Vietcong revealing a chilling picture of the enemy in battle. DVD 2 - VIETNAM 1967 - 1969 COMBAT HELL Vietnam, 1967 - 1969The Vietnam war - Almost 60,000 Americans were killed in combat action but what the war did to Vietnam and to the Vietnamese people was even more drastic. By the time Saigon fell to invading North Vietnamese forces on April 29, 1975, close to 2 million Vietnamese had died. Countless others perished or disappeared later in Cambodia during the carnage perpetuated by the Khmer Rouge. The Vietnam conflict was a war whose origins many did not understand, that seemed an exercise in futility, and that left a nation questioning the policies of a government than had always trusted. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, the longest and most unpopular war, to date, Americans have ever fought.Vietnam, 1967 - 1969 is a remarkable record of the American Administration's presentation of events, at the time, to support their cause which most would believe had little in common with the needs or wishes of the American people, the world in general and the reality of the war that films such as 'The Deerhunter' subsequently portrayed with graphic reality.Tulai - the building and defence of the Ops Command Centre that played a major role supporting the inland troops. Marines in Action 1967, the objective, securing Hill 861 and Hill 881. Marines in Action 1968, repelling the Tet offensive and operations Kentucky2, Lancaster2, Scotland2, Swift Blade 2 and Meade River. Operation Dewey Canyon, January 1969 - the US's most daring offensive of the campaign as they seek to secure A Shau and Route 548.
