You are bidding on a wooden writing slope which to the best of my knowledge is of Victorian vintage and design.
The box is veneered in elegantly grained walnut with solid walnut edgings to the perimeter of the box. The patina is very good which has built up over it's working life.
The escutcheon is polished brass in the shape of a shield, the cartouche is very similar but slightly larger. It has four brass chest corners to the lid plus eight brass angle supports. It has a two pin lock with key which works fine, although the lock is not original to the box but it is antique and is in keeping with the age of the box. There is brass banding spanning over the lid & down the back & front , two pieces have been replaced on the lid.
The internal writing boards are from solid mahogany & highly polished which hold a red/burgundy leather skiver with gold tooling & edge roll, the leather has been replaced at some point although I can't date this as I didn't replace the leather skiver. The internal of the slope is very clean and in good order.
There is a glass ink pot & glass pounce pot both with brass screw type tops, the ink pot has had black ink in it. It has a two way swivel action pen dish, a small storage area with a lid which has an ivory knob, a stamp slope, some coloured sealing wax and a dip pen with spare nibs. There are three secret drawers which each have a small neat ivory knob. The secret draws are reveiled by raising a partition of the ink well which releases a sprung loaded panel and this is fully functioning.
There is no significant damage to this writing slope but there is evidence of wear and tear which is commensurate with the boxes age. The box is of a good size and measures circa 50.3 cm x 24.5 cm x 17.3 cm (high) although these measurements aren't exact.
This writing slope would certainly attract attention in a lounge or would be a handsome study piece.
