Victorian Oval Papier Mache Platter Plate Serving Tray

Description:
This is a fabulous, 19th Century, early Victorian papier mache ebonised and gilt decorated oval tray / plate / serving platter.  This is a classic piece of Victoriana; papier mache items being very popular during the Victorian period, and were being produced before Queen Victoria came to the throne.  Among items made were trays, workboxes, inkstands, face screens, snuff boxes and letter holders and later, items of furniture. This tray platter is in characteristic black lacquer, having a beautiful serpentine edge, the rim of which is hand decorated in gold, red, white and blue cartouches, having a classic Imari influence, again also popular at the time.  A fabulous and useful item, either as a decorative piece, or for serving party foods for the festive season!  A lovely and very collectable item.

Date:
The tray platter dates circa 1860.

Condition:
The tray does show signs of crazing, this consistent with age.  There is wear to the gilded rim and the hand painted decoration (see photos), again this consistent with age and use.  There are two or three minor restorations to parts of the rim where some old repairs have been made, generally though the platter is in good condition and very servicable.
