A decorative plate by Hines Bros, from the heron Cross Pottery in Fenton, which operated for a brief period only between 1886 and 1907, when it was taken over by Grimwades.  The octagonal plate  has a design of convolvulus, realistically drawn in black on the off- white ground, alongside an inset drawing of the entrance to a country church,  framed with an octagonal black and gilded outline. Measuring 10" across the plate is in very good condition overall, with no chips, cracks or crazing.  there is rubbing to the gilded edge, which has exposed the earthenware body in some places.  The plate is stamped with the Hines Bros Heron Cross mark, the pattern name 'Rural'  and the registration mark 54703, giving a date of 1886.
