Victorian Edwin Earp Landscape Watercolour Painting

This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period.

The figural landscape depicts a beautiful romantic, classic Grand Tour scene. The aritst has cleverly used pinks, purples and blues to create a wonderful mysterious romantic mountain landscape. Mists from the lake rise skyward amid a lightly washed sky. To the foreground are the still waters of this tranquil lakeland setting, a small island to the centre where a fishing boat is moored, a gondola in the background, with small sailing boats beyond. A fine painting from the late 19th Century.

The work is signed and dated to the lower left - "E. Earp", "1876".

The work is set off by a frame of pine with plain moulded decoration, and finished in gilt. The frame is later. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount. The watercolour is in good general condition but there are a few marks and blemishes consistent with age.The painting has faded a little consistent with age, having some minor marks to areas of the sky. However, the painting is over 130 years old and still in good condition for its age. The later frame has a few chips and dings, again consistent with age. The work measures - approx 14 X 25 inches (35.56 X 63.5cm) when framed. The image measurements are- approx 7 X 17 inches (17.78 X 43.18cm).

EDWIN JOHN EARP (1848 - 1945)

The artist believed to have come from a family of painters, born in Brighton, Sussex in 1848. Edwin Earp is best know for his highland scene and landscapes most often with expanses of water.
