Licoricine from Mandall & Co
Stockton-on-Tees
A nice Victorian - Edwardian era 1890's - early
1900's Quack medicine bottle
The bottle embossing says "Licoricine" in
handwriting, then "ACTS LIKE MAGIC FOR COUGHS COLDS &c" on the front sunken
panel. Then on one side in the sunken panel "MANDALL & CO LTD" and on
the other side's sunken panel is "STOCKTON ON TEES". The base has a sunken
panel but no embossings.
The bottle is of a nice deep light bluish Aqua color
and it is a blown in mold bottle with an applied tooled double collar top, of the type
that used corks. There are several bubbles in the glass including stretched bubbles
in the neck.
The bottle is in a nice shiny condition with little
case wear.
The bottle is about 6 1/2 inches tall.

From the 1881 census of Stockton on
Tees, Durham, England, we find:
EDWARD MANDALL a widower age 48 born in
Cumberland; his children Annie age 19 born in Yorkshire, Margret E. age 17 born in
Stockton on Tees, and Mary E. age 15 born in Stockton on Tees. Also an Aunt of
Edward was living with them, Mary Wyllie age 77 born in Newcastle Northumberland.
Edward Mandall was listed as a manufacturing Chemist
Employing 18 men, 4 boys, 11 women.
