Description: A fine townscape watercolour on artist's paper dating circa 1880, unframed - approx 7 X 10 inches (17.78 X 25.4cm). This is a fine English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The townscape depicts a beautiful view of one of the narrow historic streets of Winchester City during the late 19th Century. Depicted in sepia and highlighted in watercolour, this beautiful painting gives great perspective to the tall 16th Century timbered buildings to the left, steps leading up to the doors of this narrow cobbled street. To the right the figure of a woman walks down the street, further figures climbing ladders, a horse and cart making their way down the street toward the stone arched bridge, beyond which is the rising countryside. A lovely and quaint little painting.
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1880.
Framing: None The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.
Condition: The watercolour has faded a little over time, consistent with age and authenticity, otherwise in good condition with no real significant marks. The mount has had some water damage to the right; the picture would benefit from re-mounting and re-framing.
