These truly original Meatloaf T shirts where originally from the 1993/4 (Back Into Hell)

I have managed to find these by pure luck. The history of these shirts goes like this..........

MICHAEL WHELAN AND MEATLOAF

Michael Whelan is arguably the most popular science fiction and fantasy book cover artist ever in the United States. He is certainly the most awarded, and he will be the first living artist inducted into the SF Hall of Fame in Seattle on June 27, 2009.

His outstanding book covers graced novels for authors like Isaac Asimov, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Anne McCaffrey, and Stephen King. Hitting the New York publishers in the late 70's, Michael became equally adept at painting heroes with swords, cute cuddly aliens, horror, or robots and Michael's fans often collected books just because of the cover art. He was at the height of his popularity throughout the 1980's and 90's and had fans all over the world, winning the HUGO Award (Science Fiction's Oscar) an unprecedented 15 times. He had done a few album covers too, most notably the VICTORY album by Michael Jackson and his brothers. Among his fans, were Joe Stefko (drummer on MeatLoaf's first world tour for BAT OUT OF HELL) and most importantly Jim Steinman.

In 1993, Jim and Meatloaf finally worked together again on what became the sequel to their landmark album and BACK INTO HELL was born. Michael Whelan was chosen as the cover artist and coincidentally, both Jim and Meatloaf lived nearby to Michael. He was able to talk with them in person and show them sketches as he worked on their exciting project. Meatloaf even sang to Michael's wife Audrey in their living room!

BAT OUT OF HELL II: BACK INTO HELL was the bestselling album of 1993 in the UK, reached Number 1 in 25 countries, garnered MeatLoaf a Best Rock Vocal Grammy, sold over 15 million copies, and the cover was named Best CD Cover Art of 1993 by CD Review Magazine. The accompanying CD booklet and the stage set for MeatLoaf's 1993-94 world tour featured several other Michael Whelan paintings in addition to the cover art.

 MeatLoaf's favorite Whelan paintings were also reproduced on the t-shirts sold at the concerts. ALL MY SINS REMEMBERED (man with wires and masks) was originally done for the cover of the novel of the same name by Joe Haldeman. PASSAGE: VERGE (shrouded figure standing on a rocky cliff) is one of Michael's personal gallery paintings. MeatLoaf was moved by the dramatic imagery and chose the designs himself. Prior to his first website in 1996, Michael and Audrey sold Whelan prints, posters, books, and t-shirts via mail-order catalogs and SF and fantasy convention guest appearances. They purchased these t-shirts for sale at those events and this is their remaining stock.

Today Michael Whelan is devoting most of his time to his fine art/gallery works, but he still works with Stephen King and does the occasional heavy metal album cover. For more information,  visit michael whelan
