This auction is for a very well executed oil on canvas by the artist VIVIAN D. RYAN, who has signed the painting in red in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts an officer in the cavalry in dress uniform, but bare headed, deep in concentration, reading a piece of paper in his hand. He is wearing a red short jacket, with gold braid and buttons on the front and gold braid towards the end of the sleeves of his jacket, navy blue breeches, and long black boots. His sabretache is hanging from his belt. (A sabretache is a flat satchel hanging on long straps attached to the belt of officers of the cavalry.) We would be grateful if one of the military buffs out there, could contact us if they recognise the uniform and could tell us which cavalry unit the uniform belongs to. The nearest picture we have found to the uniform depicted is the Warwickshire Yeomanry. The artist has captured the figure to perfection.
VIVIAN D RYAN was a landscape painter, who was elected Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1926. His address was Hintlesham Hall, Ipswich Suffolk in 1915 and London 1916. He exhibited 8 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 2 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, 5 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 3 at the Goupil Gallery, 4 at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and 8 at the Royal Academy. His biographical details may be found at The Dictionary of British Artists. We have only found one auction record for his work, which means that it must be quite rare and that was for an oil on canvas of a Landscape near Nice, which came up for auction in 1996, and is listed on artprice.com.
The painting is framed in a 3" swept gilt frame with black pattern, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.
