VINTAGE ROLEX OYSTER CUSHION SWEEP SECONDS WATCH

Where do I start with this watch, this is any vintage watch collectors dream. Up for auction here is a stunning looking Rolex Oyster cushion, sweep seconds watch. This model of Rolex Oyster was the first ever patented waterproof watch, a truly iconic timepiece in the history of the wristwatch. The case is 9ct pink gold which is far harder to find than the yellow gold or silver cased oysters of this period. The three-piece case consists of two threaded bezels that screw down onto the main frame of the case. The bezels screw down perfectly. Furthermore, rather astonishingly, this watch still has its original gaskets (as pictured). To find a twenties oyster with both gaskets still with the watch is a rare occurrence. The beautiful onion crown is original to the watch and winds and screws down perfectly. The inner back case is fully marked (as can be seen in the photo) and bears the British hallmark identifying it as having been assayed in Glasgow, as well as the date letter “f” which relates to the production year of 1928-29.

Another extremely rare feature of this watch is that it has a sweep seconds hand (most oyster dials of this period had subsidiary second dials). These sweep second oysters were sold by Rolex in the twenties as “special models with centre seconds for doctor’s use” and were therefore more expensive than the standard model. The dial itself has an exquisite Guilloche (engine-turned) face, giving it that dazzling sunburst effect. The watch has bold Arabic numerals and beautiful blue steeled hands.

This watch was lovingly restored and serviced a year ago by superlative time. I will send this watch complete with new box, however if a buyer lives a reasonable distance away I would encourage collection.
